10 Things You Should
Never Store Without
Climate Control in the UAE

📅 October 2024⏱ 4 min read✍️ Royal Self Storage Team

Abu Dhabi's climate is one of the most extreme on earth for stored belongings. Summer temperatures exceed 48°C outside — and inside a non-ventilated storage space, they can reach 65–70°C. Combined with humidity levels that can spike above 80% during coastal fog, this creates a perfect environment for permanent damage to almost everything you own.

At Royal Self Storage, we've seen what happens when items are stored without proper climate control in the UAE. Here are the 10 items most likely to be permanently damaged — and why all our Mussafah units are 100% air-conditioned as standard.

🌡️ UAE summer reality: While outside it feels like 48°C, inside a metal or poorly insulated storage space, temperatures routinely reach 65°C+. This is hot enough to melt certain plastics, warp wood, and destroy electronics in hours.

01

Solid Wood Furniture

⚠️ Very High Risk

Wood expands and contracts dramatically with temperature and humidity changes. In UAE storage without climate control, sofas, dining tables, wardrobes, and beds crack, warp, and split within weeks. Joints fail, veneer peels, and drawers jam permanently. Antique or high-quality wood furniture can be destroyed in a single Abu Dhabi summer.

02

Electronics & TVs

⚠️ Very High Risk

Modern electronics are designed to operate within specific temperature ranges — typically under 40°C. In non-AC UAE storage reaching 65°C+, circuit boards degrade, solder joints crack, and internal components melt or corrode. LED TVs, laptops, gaming consoles, and home cinema systems are particularly vulnerable. Heat damage is almost never covered by warranty or insurance.

03

Leather Goods

⚠️ High Risk

Leather sofas, handbags, shoes, jackets, and car seat covers dry out and crack badly in UAE heat. Humidity then promotes mould growth on the surface, often penetrating deep into the material. The combination of heat and humidity cycles causes leather to deteriorate in ways that cannot be repaired.

04

Mattresses & Bedding

⚠️ High Risk

Mattresses stored without climate control in the UAE absorb moisture from humidity spikes and become breeding grounds for mould and dust mites. The smell becomes permanent and the mattress is essentially ruined. A good quality mattress in Abu Dhabi costs AED 2,000–10,000+ — far more than a year of climate-controlled storage.

05

Artwork & Photography

⚠️ Very High Risk

Canvas artwork cracks and the paint flakes in high heat. Photographs discolour, stick together, and develop permanent yellowing. Framed artwork warps. Printed photos stored in albums can fuse together and tear when separated. For irreplaceable family photos or valuable artwork, non-AC storage in the UAE is genuinely dangerous.

06

Musical Instruments

⚠️ Very High Risk

Acoustic guitars, violins, cellos, and pianos are precision instruments built from wood glued together at specific tensions. In UAE heat and humidity fluctuations, the wood expands and contracts causing glue joints to fail, necks to bow, and soundboards to crack. A quality guitar worth AED 3,000–20,000 can be destroyed in weeks without climate control.

07

Books & Documents

⚠️ High Risk

Paper is highly sensitive to humidity. In UAE storage, books yellow, warp, and the pages stick together. Ink can run. Important legal documents, contracts, passports, certificates, and financial records can be permanently damaged. For businesses required to retain documents by UAE law, non-AC storage creates compliance risk as well as physical damage risk.

08

Clothing & Fabrics

⚠️ Medium-High Risk

Delicate fabrics — silk, cashmere, wool, linen — deteriorate in extreme heat and humidity. Mould develops on natural fibres stored in humid conditions. Synthetic fabrics can warp or develop permanent creases in high temperatures. Designer clothing, wedding dresses, and traditional garments (kanduras, abayas) should always be stored in climate-controlled conditions.

09

Wines & Beverages

⚠️ High Risk

Wine is extremely sensitive to temperature. A single day above 25°C can begin to damage wine — and UAE summer storage without climate control reaches 65°C. Wine stored in these conditions turns to vinegar rapidly. Even regular beverages in plastic bottles can develop off-flavours and leach harmful chemicals as plastics degrade in extreme heat.

10

Business Documents & IT Equipment

⚠️ Very High Risk

External hard drives, USB drives, and backup media are highly vulnerable to heat damage — stored data can be permanently corrupted at temperatures above 40°C. Server equipment, networking hardware, and specialist IT components stored in non-AC spaces in the UAE frequently fail completely. The data loss risk alone makes climate-controlled storage essential for any business IT storage in Abu Dhabi.
